Nigeria honours founding fathers

NIGERIA spared a thought for its founding fathers Sunday.
The Independence Tower –an 18-metre high monument with its four sides emblazoned with four bronze images of four prominent nationalists – was unveiled in Lagos.

The ceremony brought back memories of this country’s independence 50 years ago. It was on that spot at the Tafawa Balewa Square on Lagos Island that the Union Jack was lowered.

"I am greatly delighted to stand on this great historic spot where the Union Jack was lowered 50 years ago and the Nigerian green-white-green flag of Independence was first hoisted," Vice-President Namadi Sambo said, pointing out that the names and images engraved on the tower were by no means exhaustive of all those who fought for Nigeria’s Independence.
